1. Weight loss

The main reason people do the keto diet or a low-carb diet is for the extra energy and for hunger control, as you’ll experience a decrease in appetite. The keto diet also promotes weight loss and your body starts burning its own fat, which is why when most people hear about the diet, they immediately think of the weight loss approach. However, weight loss on keto is only one of the many benefits of a keto diet.

2. Blood sugar control

Using keto for diabetes can actually put the disease into remission. This may be something you’ll want to try even if you’re just experiencing symptoms of fluctuating blood sugar, be it in the form of low blood sugar after you’ve eaten a meal, or getting sleepy after mealtimes. Those are blood sugar regulation problems and they will improve on the keto diet.

You have to be very careful and have medical supervision if you’re on medications for diabetes, however, every diabetic who starts the keto diet will see improvement. “In a series or a survey we did with some patients, it took an average of about seven weeks to get people off of insulin. Many of these people have been on insulin for 10 years,” states Dr. Westman.

The time it takes to get better depends on how long you’ve had it and what kind of medications you’re on. There are even some improvements from the first day of adopting the keto diet.

3. Treat metabolic syndrome

There’s a new understanding that metabolic syndrome is the cause of heart disease and atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. If you have high triglyceride and low HDL (good cholesterol), elevated blood sugar that isn’t full-blown diabetes, and elevated blood pressure that’s not quite high blood pressure, this is called metabolic syndrome. To determine if you have it, you’ll need to have tests done by your doctor.

“A common misconception amongst people is thinking that if they embark on a keto or low-carb diet that consists of eating some fats, their heart condition will get worse,” says Glen Finkel. 

4. Eliminate heartburn

One of the most unrecognized benefits of a keto diet is the elimination of heartburn. “I see 98% of people off medications, the heartburn’s gone, and it’s not the main reason people come to me for,” claims Dr. Westman.

The recognized reasons people usually look to the keto diet for help with, are things such as diabetes, weight loss, and metabolic syndrome, many don’t even expect to be cured of heartburn, but they are!
